Apparently there is a melodic chime instrument in Japanese traditional music called a hokyo, based on the Chinese fangxiang, but I’m struggling to find examples of either instrument doing the arpeggio thing.
It's impossible to search for "hokyo" anything on Youtube because it keeps returning results for "Tokyo." But yes, gamelan feels closer to these tracks than any traditional Japanese music I've heard.
