you're supposed to find and knock over these things in both versions and in the remake they just blend right into the rest of the street since they're just a normal street sign instead of being a triangular and glowing gameplay doohickey
that explains why i had a hard time with this level in the remake despite not having a hard time with it when i was younger lmao.
i am endlessly complaining about how video games pursued "realism" but that really meant filling every world with innumerable decorative static objects that aren't important and that you can't interact with. they train you to treat everything as background noise, because it is, and then you can't find anything that's actually relevant to you unless they put a fucking glowing outline around it
"Look don't touch" is such a theme-park-ass approach to worldbuilding. That's all well and good if "theme park" is the intended experience, but calling that "realism" (as so many corporate PR flacks do) betrays an intense incuriosity about the actual world they presumably live in.
