thinking about Kinetic, Seagate's line of object-store hard drives whose only interface was Ethernet. they aimed to both fit 800 drives in a 40U rack (for large applications) and to eliminate the requirement for a separate NAS (for small applications). nothing happened and nobody noticed. you can buy an ST4000NK001 on eBay to fuck around with if you really want to.

i sincerely doubt there is a chassis laying around, anywhere
there's a supermicro k1048rt on amazon for 5 grand, but i'm pretty sure nobody should buy that
someone is selling just the guts on ebay for 400, that might be an option
is it just a matter of getting power to the thing and then boom passive SAS to 8p8c? are the pinouts available and are the signals literally ethernet? do these support PoE?
i mean, how expensive are they? i suspect there's a sata interface hidden in there...somewhere...
i do not think there is. they specifically are designed to only be used as an object store
"object store" has got to be one of the worst names for anything ever
so like, if i plug this in to my router will it show up as something i can communicate with or what
