in reply to @atomicthumbs's post:

I'd love to see cohost handed off to a new party that can handle the things, but that requires staff finding people they can trust to keep the site going properly and also for that person to be able to cover the costs.

Consider Fediverse / Mastodon: that whole system was built specifically to not have the problem of being stuck on a single server where all your posts are hosted. Even when a server goes down like Cohost is, your posts stay available on other servers, and you can move your account to a new server at any time. Someone may even make a platform that you could upload the data from here on to.

If this were happening on a Fediverse server, you would just have to spend the next month deciding what server you wanted to switch to, and which of your old posts you wanted to boost to your new profile.

I am currently offering to help anyone who wants to come over from here, as I would love to see more of this community on there.

i already have an account on a friend's mastodon instance. this place was started in part because the culture on the fediverse sucked so bad and because the user experience is difficult and alienating. the only way i'm gonna end up using it intensively is if there's something that lets a separate federation happen

Oh wow, I literally just got a response from someone involved in the ass tattoo story.

But yeah, the internet is full of crazy people, and something about large social networks seems to bring out the worst. It's a problem a lot of people are working to try and solve, but I guess it really isn't as easy when there are a few hundred people involved in the decision process.

That said, there are plenty of parts of the network where things are going just fine. If you're willing to try it again, I'd be happy to help you find somewhere that doesn't have ongoing drama, where you can find the sort of content you want to interact with. I can't promise the same sort of community y'all had here, but I can at least say there is a place for you there, and I am personally welcoming to anyone who wants to join.

i've barely touched mastodon since the snouts incident. so many of the problems (and people) that led to it are still there, still getting shared in my timeline, and it sucks. i've bounced around a few different instances in the years since, but the vibes just aren't the same
