When I would get into arguments on reddit (yes I KNOW I shouldn't have, but I couldn't help it), and someone would accuse me of believing something I didn't, I would respond with:

Point to where I said that

And it would immediately shut them up. Suddenly they have no choice but to engage with what you're actually saying, and they do not want to do that. You know, because they're wrong and they know that they're wrong

this is incontrovertibly a classics of post but yeah, saying it's just twitter is like... the opposite of making up a guy. Congratulations, you have described a debate/rhetorical problem so old that the debating principle against it dates back to ancient Rome and was given a modern name - "the principle of charity" - in the fifties, and then decided it's a new thing on one webbed site.
