(I'm just about to reach keelhaul key, so this certainly isn't comprehensive.)

  • Timing on guarding, action commands, and stylish moves all seem to be more forgiving. Consistently superguarding seems humanly possible.
  • Timing is also (not unexpectedly) very slightly DIFFERENT from the gamecube game, and between years of gamecube muscle memory and controller latency I'm fucking up action commands a LOT.
  • The 'press the button that appears on the screen!' interactions don't work nearly as well when all of the buttons are exactly the same skze and shape. They've done their best to adjust for this with timing windows and sometimes having the button appear for a moment then light up when you're supposed to hit it. Mostly it makes me think about how good the abxy configuration on gamecube controllers was.
  • There are a few tonal misses (rogueport sounds like a pokemon game to me lol) but a lot of the new music arrangements fucking slap.
  • Trans Vivian Real
  • I go back and forth between enjoying how they've adapted some of the 3d structures to be constructed from paper and being really, really annoyed with others. This is partly just lingering irritation at modern paper mario games bearung you over the head with everything being paper, but I also think the chunky 3d objects in pm64/ttyd did a great job contrasting with the flat sprites to emphasize the paper collage feel without being obnoxious about it. Also the models were just charmingly shaped.
  • The puddles of water in rogueport look like someone spilled clear resin. This isn't a complaint, or a compliment. It's just moderately amusing to me.
  • The yoshi's hover ability is DRASTICALLY less finicky and it is a MASSIVE quality of life improvement. It's still possible to fuck up and start hovering too soon, but the transition from running to hovering is so much smoother that running off of a ledge before hover kicks in isn't a problem.
  • Even with upscaled graphics the bed in the glitzville champion's room still looks like it's made of wood.
  • When naming the yoshi the normal switch keyboard is used, but when guessing [redacted]'s name it brings up the charming ingame keyboard and I don't understand why they didn't just use that for the yoshi too
  • Adjusting Vivian's "the three shadow lovelies" line was cute and great foreshadowing for people who didn't come in aware of She.
