so, i don't pay for any streaming services or anything anymore, just a usenet subscription, so a big thing for me is just hearing about things that people are enjoying

so here are some things that i enjoyed last month

the resort (2022) — it's been a while since i tore through every kurt vonnegut book i could get my hands on when i was in high school, but this feels like it's in that neighborhood. not finished yet, but finishing soon. it just finished and: it was great

dennou coil (2007) — i started watching this with a friend recently after watching orbital children by the same creator/director, and what a perfect show. i remember being mad back when i watched it in like 2008 about "why don't they just take their glasses off when bad things happen in the cyberspace," but i think this manages to thread a good balance between thinking through a technology completely and how it might shift and change society for a certain threshold of adoption, and then also just using that as a metaphor for occult phenomenon and the magical

nights with a cat (2022) — 60 second episodes and a 90 second opening song. perfect format. cats.

ronja the robber's daughter (2014) — this show took me like 2 years to watch from start to finish because i kept picking it up and putting it back down, but i think it's a really nice show to watch at a leisurely pace, and there's some really nice stuff in it. i don't usually go for polygon shows, but there was enough charm and love in the character designs and the material that i didn't bother me too much.

we are lady parts (2021) — this show has incredible comedic timing and pacing, and also some of the songs in it really shred. a very tight six episodes overall, it's... basically a movie cut up into episodes, or at least until they give it a second season...? (haha jk... unless?)

light & magic (2022) — i like star wars but i don't know that i would consider myself a star wars guy. regardless, i did really like this miniseries about the history of ILM as a company and some of the wrinkles there. a little hagiographic at times, but take it with a grain of salt and it's a very nice history of people talking with a lot of love about their little corner of art + technology.

the wheel of time (2021) — the first three episodes are zzzzzz for me and then shit starts to rule except for the 1990s fantasy worldbuilding style of "what if x real-world culture but fantasy." i think there's times where it's like very blatantly echoing lord of the rings, but 1.) i don't care, people make stuff based on the stuff they like sometimes 2.) rosamund pike is a very good gandalf, 3.) it's gay
