Last night, our cabinet fell. This means the parties that form the majority in our parliamentary democracy have called it quits, and new elections will be called.

This is great (not really) because there are multiple political crises happening simultaneously:

  • Not enough homes are being built because...
  • The nitrogen crisis (soil pollution) hasn't been resolved because...
  • Farmers are up in arms about having to cut back on the animal stock and...
  • Populist parties are exploiting the above three crises
  • Oh, and there's still a looming natural gas crisis
  • And we'll possibly have a fresh water crisis later this summer!

But none of this killed the coalition! Instead, the problem was that the majority party VVD (center-right liberals) wants to be crueler to immigrants, while coalition partners Christian Democrats (center-right) and D66 (center-left) did not want to do that.

So all of this has been a terrific shitshow and I can't wait for my stupid fucking country to vote for VVD again, or possibly give the BBB (Farmer's Party, one woman and her gang of right-wing extremists) a majority.

I don't want to have to hand it to ChristenUnie, but they are right that not letting families reunite is monstrous. Still, though, scary times ahead. Also annoying times, because you know that USAmericans are going to need explanations on why the farmer's party is not actually cool and working class.

I agree; it's unusual that CU comes out of these debates looking like they have the high ground, but the VVDs policy proposal of checks notes "just get those brown people to fuck off" was truly abhorrent. Still, the fact that this was what broke trust in the coalition feels off to me. It feels like a normal policy disagreement that just exploded in VVDs face.
