If you solo dev for too long, you end up with a warped sense of reality. You’ll see a trailer for a new indie game and go, “oh wow, this looks great. I bet 3, maybe even 4 people worked on this,” and then you check the developer site and it’s actually 23 in-house staff, a dozen collaborators, and a legendary Japanese composer.

Baldur’s Gate 3? That’s a big one. They probably had at least two artists. The programmer must have had their work cut out for them.

"Wow, the graphics team really fumbled the Direct3D 12 integration, huh?"

The team? Oh, you mean Bob? Yeah, he did the whole thing by himself. He was sitting behind me.

i think the term indie alone dosen't tell u a lot now since there is such a wide range of team and resources sizes. I'm starting to think maybe grassroots would be a good descriptor of small or solo dev teams. Though indie would still be accurate as well. even without being a dev i find it easy to misjudge the size of a team. There are some great games that i'd assume would be a team effort but end up being one dev and games that i think are indie in the assumed sense but end up being a small team under a big publisher.
