i keep getting this one recommended to me and its driving me crazy because i do want to know the answer to this question but not from a guy called Tech Altar who uses the word "innovation" and looks like that
i can kind of put together a guess from what i know: i think the video title is kind of a lie, there's actually been a huge amount of development in the e-ink space with some very high refresh rate screens and even color displays, but they haven't made their way into consumer devices. that's the part i don't really know why, though i'd guess it's because the ipad came into existence and it can do everything an e-reader can do and more but with the extremely minor arguable sometimes disadvantage of a backlit screen and the general trend in consumer electronics has been away from specialized devices like e-readers and mp3 players and towards devices that are more multifunction
And I don't have high standards, so I watched it. In summary:
- Kindles still have bevels, what's up with that? (They make it more comfortable to hold an e-book)
- Why only 16 GB of storage? (That's a lot of books, my guy)
- Not a lot of innovation in this space because e-readers are already kind of perfect
- E-ink has limited uses for consumer devices, but they're great for retail (think e-ink price tags in groceries)
- Only one company makes e-ink, and their patents might expire soon
- New competitors are on the horizon - Remarkable is making an e-ink tablet that is very popular
Overall, I get why you might be turned off by the branding, but the video was acceptable.
