To be fair, there was already a spiritual successor in Planetary Annihilation. I kickstarted that back in 2012 and when it came out a few years later I'd checked out of interest in it so I have no idea if it actually turned out any good. Reviews were apparently bad. This is from the same company as Planetary Annihilation, and was sent out to all backers of it.
Planetary Annihilation turned out... fine, I guess? There are control issues with the 'set an RTS on a sphere' concept, but it's otherwise a perfectly competent Total Annihilation.
But also, BAR exists and is free. YMMV.
I really like PA - it's a bit of an odd duck, but it's fun! Not sure about the business model with this one though.
