Explanation: The Netherlands has privatized its health insurance industry, and it's mandatory to have health insurance¹. The government mandates the minimum level of coverage in each plan and provides a stipend to ensure every citizen can buy one.² Unless extenuating circumstances exist, you can only switch health insurance providers between December 1st and December 31st every year. And that's why we get bombarded with the stupidest ads possible in December.

For Americans, imagine if Obamacare had actual teeth. It still fucking sucks.
You will not be surprised to learn that the cheapest plan you can get is exactly the stipend. Free market, baby!!

Every time I see/hear a country talk about moving to privatize their healthcare, I want to scream. Don't do that. Grab onto your public healthcare and never let them take it from you.

The worst part is that we used to have socialized healthcare in the Netherlands, called "Ziekenfonds". This was a private entity owned by the government that had enormous bargaining power. But nope! Gotta chase that free market innovation!!
