The "iPhone moment" for VR (if there is one, I don't think there is) would require several more huge leaps in technology. Dramatically more miniaturized processors that are also more powerful. Even higher-res displays, that possibly use some sort of lightfield display tech to overcome the vergence-accommodation conflict. Smaller, lighter-weight, more powerful batteries. Much better lens optics to get a natural FOV in a shallower form factor. Cheaper cameras so you can pack more to track hands when they aren't right in front of you. Even then, I don't think it would be enough

The funny thing is that the Apple Goggles do most of that! It has an impressive display where each pixel is only a few microns across so there isn't the typical screendoor effect you get while wearing other headsets. It also tracks your pupils to optimize the rendering only for what you're directly looking at, just like how your real squishy eyeballs are optimized by nature. Cameras surround the outside, which means your hands are tracked basically anywhere you put them. It has only 16 ms latency for the passthrough cameras, which is good enough to play friggin' ping-pong while wearing the headset. And all of that _isn't good enough, because you're still wearing a goofy-ass 640-gram (1.4 lb) headset with no real killer app.
