a final word: defensive mantras / a counterpoint
counter to traditional wisdom, i think it is generally worthwhile to read the comments—many of these are in direct conversation with each other.
i will make additions to this as they crop up, and folks are free to add things to the pile in the comments, but as they say: several people are typing, and this will probably go out of date relatively fast. i just wanted to make a snapshot of some of the things i was seeing because i think everyone involved here are smart people whose opinions i have a lot of respect for, but following a thing like this can be difficult.
