i finally finished cult of the lamb today... suuuch a cute game

i have so many thoughts about the art and worldbuilding. it feels like halfway between binding of isaac and hollow knight, although obviously the isaac influence is what it wears on its sleeve. i think the themes and mood and sense of humor that cult of the lamb tries to go for by juxtaposing cutesy art with dark religious themes is really different from isaac though.

i kind of wish i was more of a mythology/religious studies nerd so i could say more about the religious imagery this game uses to establish its vibe and the real-world history of that imagery, but i suspect the intent behind it is mostly a cartoony view of "creepy occult stuff" in a pop culture sense that mostly comes from folk horror movies.

the settlement building aspect is definitely on the simple side compared to a lot of settlement builders but it really wants you to build an individual relationship with your critters and view them not just as tools but also as pets. you are responsible not only for their food and shelter but also their view of you personally. you are urged to instill enough love and devotion in each follower to reinforce their willingness to die for you.

extremely a labor of love from people who understand the value of indulging and playing in fucked up and twisted power dynamics for fun! i really love it. i love being so niceys to everyone but also normalizing cannibalism in my cult so they gleefully line up to munch on the remains of their friends and fantasize about being the next sacrifice. i love putting all my followers on mushrooms so they cheer me on as i kill and butcher them one by one and feed them all to my wife :eggbug-smile-hearts::eggbug-smile-hearts::eggbug-smile-hearts::eggbug-smile-hearts:

i just hope all the zoomers who love this game are taking the right lessons from it and realize that this dynamic is fucked up no matter how nice you are to your pets, and not doing something wild like passing judgement on people for how they play the game. right? oh dear...
