I miss them. I have an iPad Pro to make art for my YT channel and do commissions. I like listen to music. Despite having a “prosumer” device, this thing has only a USB C port. While it has Bluetooth, and I can listen through wireless headphones, my nice headphones that are comfortable for long stretches are wired, so I can’t use them here without some shitty dongle.

I went on a work trip recently, and flew from [STATE 1 REDACTED] to [STATE 2 REDACTED]. Because my phone does not have a headphone jack, I couldn’t take my above-mentioned comfy headphones with me. On top of the other stuff running my phone battery down, having to rely on this device in a part of the country I’ve never been to before, I also had to drain it further with Bluetooth headphones.

There’s too many wireless things. And really, wireless just moves the wires from an “in use” thing to an “in rest” thing. My wireless headphones need to be charged, and if I want to charge it and my phone at the same time that’s another wire and brick, most likely.

It’s got to a point where I’m considering getting bespoke devices for my “needs”. I don’t have to worry about Spotify or Plexamp draining my phone battery if I have a modded iPod classic. If I want to read something on my phone, pull out the Kindle instead. No more phone games, I’m playing an aliexpress portable emulator from now on. So on and so on.

I know complaining about headphone jacks is like… the most complained about thing with modern phones and similarly portable devices. But it fucking sucks! I hate watching videos with the very clear Bluetooth delay! I’d rather watch an entire season of Scrubs on a 5th gen iPod Nano than deal with the weird audio delay. I hate draining my battery for a technology that, seemingly, isn’t really much better than regular ass headphones!

Having a dedicated portable music device is nice, but the problem with having too many things to charge remains - between train rides, instead of charging my phone plus wireless headphones, i'm charging my phone plus iPod Video that serves me up to this day (just with custom firmware so i can just drop mp3s via usb and don't have to deal with iTunes).
Still, love having a battery charge in my phone despite having been listening to music for the last 3 hours.

Yeah that’s true! I guess the trade off is that you’re likely to not be changing everything at once as often. Like, a kindle will hold a charge longer than a daily driver phone, so you’re maybe charging that once a week compared to every night for a phone? So its charger could live somewhere else.

I guess it’s really just trading one problem for another, in the grand scheme of things haha

Having a brick with two usb outs helps a lot, hah.
Also, having offline-only music device made me avoid services like spotify entirely. I just have no use for something that requires me to be online to just put sounds into headphones - this is just silly. So it's a win-win already.
