Things I miss: ddr on my PS2
Things I don't miss: cheap shitty foam dance mats that need constant replacement
You can do it on a computer, with NotITG or Project Outfox. You don't need a full cabinet!
Ltek dance pads run about $400 with shipping to the US, and are pretty dang good, from what I understand. Mine hasnt arrived yet, I'm still using my decades-old soft pad that's falling apart 😅
yeah I stumbled across ltek already! thanks for the recommend on NotITG because I was really jonesing for something flashy - StepMania is cool but it seems like it's really for people who already love DDR and I'm just trying to get into it.
If you're just getting into it and want a classic DDR experience, Beware's plug-and-play DDR Extreme simulation, which has all the classic arcade UI, is a fun place to start.

Also, I recommend downloading the simfiles from the old DDR games as the best entry point (you can get 'em at zIv, link, below). I prefer Outfox but they'll work with NotITG/Stepmania, too.

I have an Ltek pad and I think they're great, which is a good thing since they're basically the only commercially available pads these days. They use pressure sensors to register inputs rather than contact, so they're super reliable, though the panels will need to be replaced every once in a while (I use my pad a lot and had to replace the panels after a year and a half).
yeah I've never played DDR ever but I just kinda wanna play and have no sense of what the best packs for learning/training are. is the first thing you linked a mod for some other engine or is it a standalone thingie?
edit: guess it's for stepmania
what are the must-have packs for someone who has no clue about the difference for any of them? there's hundreds. looking for stuff with a good skill spread that will keep me entertained while building up my stamina and reading skills and not just challenge packs for existing experts
For official packs, Dance Dance Revolution EXTREME, SuperNOVA, DDRMAX, DDRMAX2, and any of 2nd through 7thMIX, those are the oldest official charts and, as is the way of these things, generally have the best mix of accessibility and challenge without you having to reckon with any of the stuff modern DDR players have cooked up.
For unofficial packs...I like Ben Spiers' Weebmix. There aren't a ton of packs I could unreservedly recommend for a new player, but that one I can. (EDIT: this isn't to say they aren't out there - there are a bajillion packs out there, and I've only played a small fraction of them.)
I'll be putting out a pack in the next week or two that should fit the bill as well (I've spent a lot of time fine-tuning the lower-difficulty versions of charts) so stay tuned.
yah I saw yr post but don't speak ddr-ese so wasn't sure if it's relevant. will happily try it out if it's beginner friendly!
8000???????????
That’s preposterous
