I played through almost all of Hardest on 5, and I'm told wing diver there is pretty similar to 4.1; she got a massive buff in 6 in that she now has a dedicated grenade slot so you always get to pick two real-deal weapons PLUS a grenade that does not charge from mains power, so you have an awful lot of versatility in missions now when your backpack runs dry to either deploy a light shield, throw an actual grenade, or deploy laser mines/traps or homing grenades like the Gleipnir. It's honestly so huge for WD gameplay; I basically carry a Rapier + Gleipnir with me at all times and then get a totally free third slot for whatever the mission actually calls for, and only on fairly rare occasions to I need to hyper-specialize for the mission at hand.

It's soooo nice.

downsides: they nerfed the jetpack a little, boosts cost a little bit more now, so kiting isn't quite as free as it used to be, but it's honestly pretty minor and with the increase in defense/emergency options, has not been terribly missed.

my standard loadout unless I know I'll need something different is:

  • Rapier (independent battery)
  • Stardust Cannon
  • Gleipnir (homing grenade) (independent battery and charging!)

it works for like 95% of levels and it's life-changing over having only two slots in EDF5

the Rapier is super great at dealing horrifically massive damage to anything you can get close to, it's fantastic for mowing down hordes of bugs but it's also great as a boss-buster for anything ground-based, and it can chew through armor and stagger a lot of resilient baddies. and since it has its own clip battery it's also a fantastic last-resort weapon if your jetpack runs out of juice.

the Stardust Cannon deals horrific damage at genuinely longer distances than it has any right to and is great for kiting and splashing large groups of dudes but also fantastic for doing large numbers to boss monsters, esp if they move too fast for the slower moving plasma cannons. and it costs way less than most plasma weapons too! also if you suck at aiming the spray'n'pay really works out :)

and the gleipnir homing grenade thing spits out 600 homing projectiles that are fantastic for downing mob fliers and staggers almost anything it hits, so even if it's low damage it's a great offensive decoy you can bust out after a hit-and-run on a transport ship or teleportation anchor that will help keep you alive as you dash back off to safe kiting distance.

having all three on hand allows for some truly YEEHAW carefree grade S+ wing diver bullshit and I absolutely love it

Back in 4.1, I was always partial to the Thunder Bows for my secondary. I never really tried getting used to the way momentum moved my plasma shots 😅

I never really got to try out most of the grenades, because it would mean sacrificing that second weapon slot...

Maaaan, now you've got me debating picking up EDF 6
