Fun read here. People have been complaining for years that some Psikyo shooters have too much lag in MAME, and insisting on an alternate emulator that has less input lag. Turns out... MAME has exactly the same amount of input lag as the original boards, and that other emulator cuts down on the lag because its emulation is intentionally inaccurate and skipping a few things that was slowing them down.

TBH if I was reissuing these games I would probably want to do it with reduced input lag too! That feels closer to the original intent, if we can assume they didn't mean for it to have four frames of input lag?

Yeah, agreed! I feel like the "this feels better" question and "this is more accurate" question are different from each other. The issue I think is just that people assumed the higher input lag was also less accurate, which... wasn't true in the end

It's really cool to see the devblogs for emulation - I was just looking over the commits on mamedev the other day and saw some timing changes to the Psikyo driver -- turns out it was the same person, buffis, who wrote the linked writeup!
