lakes are inherently untrustworthy bodies of water. what are they doing there. they don't move

the ocean: water moves constantly in ways I can predict by looking at the sky. salty. can easily kill me if I don't respect it. swimming in it feels like home. seaweed is my friend. sea monsters might be real and eating me is their right, but probably won't because the nearshore is so different from the deep sea. trustworthy

lakes: water doesn't move. not salty (most of the time). swimming in them feels like invading an alien realm. water texture is wrong. there's lake weed. what lives in there? untrustworthy

rivers: they move. pass on a technicality

the great lakes: they're big enough they can do some oceanlike stuff. not salty. honestly going to have to visit them to really get their vibe. undecided

Respect the Lake and they will treat you like a friend. They'll take care of you and welcome you.

this is the exact opposite of my liz, who grew up on a lake, comes from a place with a LOT of lakes, and whose parents both studied lakes

for what it's worth, i don't really like swimming in lakes either.

we get warnings here in Chicago every once in a while about the lake being rowdy and the waves being huge to the point where it’s not safe to go near the lake in certain places/at certain times.

lakes are for hiding a big weird “spider” that prevents us normies from perceiving the true horrors of the cosmos

highly recommend visiting the great lakes; they're just neat!

While I totally agree swimming in lakes feels wrong, I do have to say being on one, especially in a tiny watercraft, is a special kind of loneliness that's extremely beautiful

As someone who used to live near a Great Lake and has swum in at least 2 I will say:

  • Lake Michigan moves but is untrustworthy for other reasons
  • Lake Superior will never divulge the secrets it knows

Do you have pond opinions?

Moving from living by the ocean most of my life to living next to a great lake is a little disorienting. It does satisfy my need to be close to a large body of water (I'm within walking distance btw, for when you come visit) and I have seen actual waves but they're somehow disturbing? I am definitely getting more horror novel ideas here

also my friend who grew up here says their college included surfing on the lake as a benefit of going to school here, so I did some research and apparently surfing does happen on the lake. I haven't had time to watch the videos to understand this yet though

Pools: greatly diminished chance of mystery objects/creatures touching your legs. but expensive and changing room situation is often dicey. also may contain excessive densities of children who have not yet learned about Personal Space. ultimately cannot endorse
