anyway, have i ever mentioned how nice it would be if we actually got to retain the copyrights on our localizations and/or received royalties for any and all sales generated from them, whether for the original content or subsequent ports/remakes/what-have-yous in the future
because those would be pretty dandy
i'd like either or both of those things
This actually did happen back in the 90s with one specific company. The problems? That company was Working Designs, and Victor Ireland is still squatting on those translation rights, to the point that Sega couldn't get the Lunar TSS/EB/Popful Mail translations to use on the international Genesis Mini 2 because they either cost too much or Vic was MIA. Also, these were the Working Designs translations and hoo boy they have aged like milk
I also wonder if Vic wanted payment for WD's Shining Wisdom localization from Sega of Europe, who wound up doing their own script in-house
Yeah, for my own baggage I bring into this, I admit that I'm not unsympathetic to the publisher perspective on the matter of copyrights specifically and certainly I don't think what Vic has done is particularly productive for anyone involved, either. I can't imagine whatever contract he has says they can't produce another translation from scratch, but I wouldn't want to be the bean counter who has to justify such an endeavor in 2023, either.
I'm not exactly holding my breath on anything changing anytime soon either way, I just try not to think too hard what it means when some of my games end up resurfacing and doing well, ahaha.
it would be cool for what it represents for the people localizing these games... but introducing companies to the mix I can only fear more Harvest Moon situations would pop up with this........
