I was reading up on the Japanese annual kusoge awards, and I was shocked to see Kentucky Route Zero show up... until I got to the description of the localization being disastrously bad. Whoof. The judges mentioned having high expectations based on how it was described by English-speakers, only for it to be basically incoherent. What a shame.

Of all the games to phone it in on... why even bother releasing it in Japan if they weren't going to try to do a good job?
sometimes it's genuinely out of your control - publisher promises you the world and you only learn it's machine translated or whatever when it releases. That's what happened with Necrobarista's Chinese translation. We ended up having to completely redo it in-house. It also happened with like ten other languages we released in. We weren't able to fix those in-house.
Yeah, makes sense. I've heard many stories from studios who understandably don't even know how to evaluate the quality of the localizations they got, and also miss out on the conversations happening about their game in other languages.
It is a real bummer. At least our Japanese (and German, I think?) locs were good. Shoutout to Playism for not phoning them in lol
