From the archives: I wrote about Renal Summer, a beautiful and genuinely moving game about mortality and grief. Over seven real-time days, the dog lives out their life persistently in the phone app; whenever you open it, you can work as the dog's liver to help them live more comfortably. I'm still surprised at what a great job it does of deliberately lifting the push notification mechanics of exploitative free-to-play games and using them for something much more thoughtful.
