Replying rudely to a stranger online, publicly, where they can see it:
Wow I love the new age of communication!
That person reads it and responds negatively:
Hey what the fuck leave me alone

I don't know if I'm just old or something but everytime I say something on social media its always filtered through a "what would this sound like if I said it to someone at a party" or "if someone called me on this in public would I be able to defend it".
It feels insane that a huge swath of people I see online are just blasting whatever they want just assuming no other human beings exist on the other side of the screen and then getting weirdly surprised and defensive when the other person responds like any normal person would.

A real "wants to talk shit all day but too anxious to order food over the phone" type attitude or however the tweet goes

this filter + “if i say this thing i’m pissed off about out loud to my friend who doesn’t go on social media will i feel like a dumbass” has saved me from a lot of headache spirals. cannot imagine swimming the seas of online without it

to your closing sentence, i will also say 100% of the people i've met who talk like this online are afraid to look the average person in the eye.

the number of people who talk big and are willing to actually put their shit on the line in real life likely doesn't exceed the high tens, maybe low hundreds if we're including the whole planet and not just the pockets of land we're on.
