We discovered last night that Isabel Sandoval, an amazing writer/director/actress from the Philippines, has all three of her films currently available in a feature on Criterion Channel.
We've watched two of them so far; "Señorita" is my favorite of the two, and it is something rare, a "trans film" that isn't actually about being trans. (The movie is actually about idealism and a municipal election in the rural Phillipines. I promise this is gripping.) "Señorita" is also unbelievably hard to find; none of the three Sandoval movies on Criterion Channel are currently streaming anywhere else in Canada, and when we previously attempted to find "Señorita" we found not only was it not available to rent or purchase in any format new or used, it wasn't even readily available through *clears throat violently* alternate means. So Criterion Channel offering these films is actually a pretty rare opportunity. "Recommend".
