honestly I really want to get into rainworld more bc I like the art + the rw fandom overlaps with several I enjoy, but playing it just wasnt super enjoyable? doEs anyone have any tips to enjoying the game more or could it be a lost cause?

that depends what about it was unenjoyable! ik the lack of guidance can trip some people up - there's no shame in asking for tips on negotiating certain areas or progressing the plot.
I think I am a little lost as to what to do yeah - I did get that you need to eat food and find a resting spot before the rain comes to not die and there's some areas with karma barriers but that's about it. Also the time limit of the rain makes me not want to travel too far and I feel like that's probably bad for progression
first, you will die a lot; it's a tough game and you learn to roll with it. the cycles do feel less short as you learn how to travel quickly. :)
second, there are maps on the rain world wiki that will show you where to find dens. in general, the wiki is really good if you need guidance, i'm a modestly experienced player and i still refer to it sometimes.
third, the little yellow creature, iggy, will lead you through the majority of the plot. it'll point you in more-or-less the direction you need to go. (it also sometimes points you towards food or shelter, or points out danger.) it's generally agreed that the plot is best if you go in blind, but if you need more specific directions i can give them.
mod recs:
sbcamerascroll: makes the camera not suck
no wormgrass: removes worm grass (fuck worm grass)
aim anywhere: permits using the mouse buttons to grab/throw stuff, throwing with mouse throws spears or rocks towards the mouse (can be disabled if only mouse bindings are desired, and can also be set to also throw towards the mouse when using the keyboard/gamepad throw buttons)
sharpener (assuming high-res monitor1): improves the game's upscaling
emerald's tweaks and features: adds a bunch of fairly minor things, including a number of quality-of-life and accessibility options
health bars: self-explanatory
gameplay tips:
the downpour expansion adds a bunch of quality of life fixes/improvements, as well as accessibility features and more information
there is no shame in playing the monk campaign first, rain world is brutal enough on its own
rain world's difficulty is highly influenced by the player's understanding of its systems and mechanics
in every campaign except one (||hunter's||hunter'shunter's) there is no penalty for taking your time. go slowly, be patient, take it easy.
death acts more punishing than it really is. the only thing that your current karma actually affects is which regions you can go through2
your two most valuable skills as a rain world player are risk assessment and patience. don't get into fights you don't have to.
rain world's movement system is absolutely fucking obscene in its complexity (see the 143-PAGE143-PAGE movement guide below)
rain world is an ecosystem simulation first and a video game second. you are a slugcat. you are not an apex predator. you are not a fighter. you are a small, insectivorous rodent, not that far from the very bottom of the food chain. do not forget that.
once again, monk's campaign is not radioactive, it's not a baby mode, no one will judge you for playing as monk, anyone who does judge you for playing monk is not to be trusted or respected.
ultimately, rain world is a very brutal, very unforgiving, and frequently unfair game, and it is not meant for everyone.

in general, it is often better to think of rain world's creatures as less like standard video game enemies in a singleplayer game and more like other players in an arena fps
to-do list
the yellow thing that gave you the tutorial is called an overseer. it is your main guide through the game, and will attempt to lead you through the dev-intended main route, outlined below:
resources:
an interactive map of the entire game lives here
the aforementioned 143-PAGE143-PAGE movement guide lives here
the inevitable rain world wiki lives here
rain world's native base resolution is 1024768 in 4:3 ratio and 1366768 in 16:9 (widescreen) ratio, so it only actually helps if your monitor is actually larger than that
||and whether you can meet echoes, which are only important if you really care about the lore or you're playing hunter's campaign||and whether you can meet echoes, which are only important if you really care about the lore or you're playing hunter's campaignand whether you can meet echoes, which are only important if you really care about the lore or you're playing hunter's campaign
if im gonna be entirely honest, there is no shame in cheating. get mods to make it easier, use dev tools if you get stuck, it doesnt matter. the story and little details are worth it in my opinion. if you can play it without help? awesome. but it is an incredibly hard game. its unforgiving. so dont feel bad if you need to cheat to get through it.
