The greatest wrestling entrance music of all time made a weird appearance, kind of, on last night's AEW Rampage.
But it wasn't this version and it wasn't for Adam Cole, it was the low effort mashup version with Mike Bennett's old ROH theme, from when Cole and Bennett (with Maria Kanellis-Bennett) were a tag team called the Kingdom. It played for the current version of the Kingdom, Mike Bennett and Matt Taven (with Maria Kanellis-Bennett), formerly of Impact Wrestling's Honor No More stable, which was comprised of disgruntled former ROH wrestlers. While in Impact, Taven and Bennett sometimes called themselves OGK, cuz, y'know, original Kingdom.
But they're not the original Kingdom. The original Kingdom was Cole, Bennett, Kanellis and Matt Hardy. Cole and Hardy both also work for for AEW (though Cole is sidelined with an injury atm) which makes this even more wild to me? Matt Taven joined later, and eventually the group dissolved and was then reformed under Taven's leadership with TK O'Ryan and Vinny Marseglia filling out the rest of the ranks.
Anyway I fucking love that in 2022 the old sleazy Adam Cole theme popped up in poorly-remixed form, for a segment Cole wasn't even involved in. It's like a special treat for nerds like me who were watching Ring of Honor in 2014 and remember how the Kingdom was originally cobbled together. They didn't even have their own music, just this jank-ass combo of two singles wrestlers' themes. And now a much wider audience gets to hear it devoid of any context. Wrestling is so fucking weird and it's great.
