It's there to support a massive passive (or maybe with a little 40mm fan if you're lucky) heatsink that's half glued onto the side of whatever slot 1 cpu was cheapest that week.

Oops, All Jank! We have:
- 3 ISA-16 slots that will be so slow you wish they didn't exist
- 4 PCI (not E)
- 1 AGP that will freak out if you so much as breath on it too hard
- a cpu slot, not socket, slot
- ports. not many.
- prob. only half-support of ACPI making it worse than useless.
Are those…retention clips on the IDE connectors? What? I’ve plugged a lot of those cables in in my life and never saw that.
I'm pretty sure you've nailed it. I think I'm mad about it. What a hassle.
literally easier to unplug from the drive side and just leave the stupid ribbon cable attached to the motherboard. It's not like it made the airflow in those cases worse because there wasn't any.
