A lot of ppl (even myself, i admit) have a knee jerk reaction to CGI and that practical effects are automatically always better but it's real not that cut and dry. Problem is if CGI is real good it hard to notice as opposed to bad one.
CGI owns when it's used properly and the vfx artists are given the time and budget to do it right!!!
It's because VFX houses aren't unionized and execs can treat them like sweatshops that make it cheaper than other options. Unionize visual effects, get em a fair contract, let directors choose how to do effects based on what's the best option for the picture.
I think we'd have way less half baked shitty looking CGI, and maybe a few more high CGI beauties like Shin Ultraman or Battle Angel Alita (minus the eye thing that was dumb).
