contemplating a crab's immortality

Yeah not gonna lie, despite a lot of jank I actually had a pretty good time playing through Super Hydlide.

I get why people wouldn't like this game, but I think a lot those inconveniences add to the charm? Things like the weight system, the hunger and sleep systems, the more cryptic puzzles, or just the general grindy nature of the game. I think a lot of these things add their own kinds of tension, force you to make interesting decisions, and the game would probably be worse without them?

I think it also helped that I was taking notes and drawing little maps as I played. The game suddenly changed from "I gotta survive this dungeon and make it to the boss" to "I need to seek out as much knowledge I can, regardless of if I survive".
I got to know even the more demanding dungeons like the back of my hand, and that was incredibly satisfying as somebody that tends to get hopelessly lost in games like this. It's saying something that I even enjoyed figuring out the dark dungeons where you can normally only see a few tiles in front of you.

Often with other games I end up kinda rushing through them towards the end, but I don't think that leaves a good impression on me by the time I'm done. This was one of the few times in recent memory where I was able to actually sit down and really sink my teeth into a game, figure this stuff out, get through the final dungeon, and totally not cheese the final boss nope.

I don't know if I'd recommend this game exactly, it's still pretty jank in ways that tested my limits at times, but it scratched a very specific itch for me.
