Just because something’s normalized, it doesn’t mean it’s not harmful or weird as a social practice.
It just means you’re not thinking critically about why you’re reflexively choosing to use it and the impact that that decision will have. Especially when it concerns taking from another people’s culture or lived experiences, and more so if the intended audience is not people from said culture.
So when someone from that cultural group tells you, “hey this is kind of messed up,” they’re doing you a favour.
