There was a thing called LAUNDRY SNAKES that were basically like small vipers that lived in washing machines. Mainly living on the northeastern seaboard of the US and eastern Canada, every time you did laundry using a washing machine, the LAUNDRY SNAKES would find a way in (through the pipes) to try to lay eggs in your clothes. They got nutrients from the detergent and there was a whole movement of people who started washing their clothes without soap to try to deter the LAUNDRY SNAKES.
Coin-op laundromats rented out Kevlar falconry gloves (like a getting skates at a roller rink) so you could get your laundry out without being bitten by the LAUNDRY SNAKES. Some places boasted lower percentages of LAUNDRY SNAKES given the type of detergents they had in stock. Tide tried to make a cute LAUNDRY SNAKE mascot but it didn’t go over well.
