My laptop is ten years old and it works great. I replaced the 5400 rpm hard drive with a cheap secondhand SSD. Someone tried to do the old drill-thru-the-middle trick for making hard drives unrecoverable, but all they got was casing.
I maxed out the ram with old parts from dead machines. Fast, high capacity ram that would have simply gone in a landfill because it's not DDR Whatever
I replaced the screen with a generic 1080p panel off eBay. A little snug, but perfectly secure with a bit of black duct tape to assist the old screws and clips.
And of course, windows would never tolerate this, but it doesn't take anything special -- Debian does everything I need.

You don't need the new shit.
Let's eat garbage together.

I used to use a low end laptop from 2008 up until about 2019 (not my primary system, but I used it regularly away from home. It could play HD video or music and let me write and that's all I needed). The reason I stopped was because a key snapped off and the cheapest I could get a compatible replacement keyboard was $50. I'd put a cheap secondhand SSD in and maxed out the RAM years ago. A friend offered to sell me a much much newer laptop they had that actually had enough oomf to do subtitle editing WITH the video loaded for way less than it was worth, so that's my back-up/travel system now.

That ancient laptop actually got plugged directly into the fiber modem to seed torrents for months because I could administer it remotely while I was moving.
