Blackburn Meadows Biomass Plant, A4.
I got some funny looks trying to get a reference photo from the train as I went past, so in the end I got some photos from the architect's website instead. Slightly different as the carving was done on a Japanese vinyl sheet rather than the usual artist's linoleum. A bit more process chat below for anyone who may be interested in such things:
I'm not sure about this vinyl stuff as opposed to lino - as it's a lot more rubbery, I felt like I spent a lot of time dealing with little stray strands that would snap off cleanly from a lino block, but here just stretched out and got in the way. Tidying up sharp corners was also more difficult.
One of the selling points of the vinyl is that the top surface is blue or green, but then you carve into it and just underneath is a different colour, so you can see where you've carved. However, the lower colour is... black. Which is not tremendously helpful when I'm trying to carve away the bits that will be white and leave the black design. Hmm. So a lot of the time I wasn't sure of where I'd carved or not, so I just had to trust I'd got it right the first time. It came out alright for all that.
So I'll be sticking with lino but the vinyl does have advantages - very easy to clean, it's softer so less tool sharpening required, it's smooth to carve and it does seem to keep a nice edge so if you were doing larger, bolder designs with fewer fiddly details I think it would be very well suited to that.
