i spent the last week checking out death stranding again (https://twitter.com/NewsSwsArmyKnfe/status/1738815412316565505) and i was really enjoying it except for the roadblocks that ended my first attempt (the cutscenes in the Fragile and Mama chapters)

getting past those got me to an incredibly rewarding and exciting period of gameplay emphasizing exploration and traversal in a really fun and fascinating way that's super different from any open world game or platformer or whatever

and then i hit the endgame, which is one of the most miserable stretches of kojima-isms outside of Ground Zeroes and actively worsened my enjoyment of the rest of the game

odd thing to remember now, but this is a really good counterexample to xenoblade chronicles 2, a game with a solid start and wretched middle segment but with characters i adore and an endgame that lifts the entire experience. higgs and malos even have similar goals except malos has writing to back his up
