Incredible shots, vibes, and soundtrack surround a plot that's shaky at best. I do appreciate an attempt to grapple with the golem myth, although reading up on this a bit suggests that it was hampered a bit by trying to shoehorn that angle onto source material that had nothing to do with it at all. I think the core flaw of this movie, if I had to put a name to it, is that it doesn't have room for Michael Mann's signature dynamic: two men hopelessly pining away for each other in a doomed homoerotic bromance.
