I'm choosing Baru Cormorant in particular bc, although I've read it before, I retained almost no particulars of the complex plot and I want to be able to move smoothly onto the next novel

That's rad! My partner does this a lot for fiction, but not in parallel, just to have a hands-free way to continue reading. She says one enriches the other, which makes sense to me. (Probably depends a bit on the reader though.)
