While I haven't run the well of English-language mysteries dry quite yet, I certainly know the lay of the land enough to see most things that I'm most likely to really enjoy. But there are so many other places making so much filmed media! Cohost, please give me your recs!

  • Long-running/heavily procedural is fine, but movies/miniseries are ideal.
  • Stuff that leans into the psychodrama is my favorite, although again this isn't a requirement.
  • I have already seen Trapped and I am aware of Furuhata Ninzaburō. Other than that, this is all pretty much uncharted territory for me.
  • If anything doesn't involve cops that's a big plus, but given the genre I'm not holding my breath.

the korean show Beyond Evil is one of the best things I have ever seen, period. You've got a tight 16 episode show where the first half is dealing with a murder mystery, and the second half is dealing with the consequences of the police misconduct involved in solving that murder mystery. It rules. Also it has so many scenes of handsome men wet and/or crying.

Sonar Kella (The Golden Fortress) is a really fun Bengali detective film by legendary filmaker Satyajit Ray. Not really sure how accessible it is to watch since I watched it unsubtitled on a bootleg dvd from Kolkata.

ive watched a few episodes of "astrid et raphaëlle" and liked it, it involves an autistic archivist being the informal partner of a police detective. i cant speak to how the whole series goes, but it honestly has some of the best portrayals of autism ive seen on screen. the bar is on the floor with other media trying to do the same, but the show does seem to be trying to make an honest attempt to show what living with autism as an adult is like while making astrid a well rounded character too.

in/spectre is fun, though I wouldn't really call the mystery part of it robust. el-melloi files is also fun but similarly the supernatural aspect undermines the mystery solving part.
i enjoyed them both a lot for what they were, so if the premises sound interesting give them a go

apothecary diaries is fantastic, though as it proceeds it focuses a little more on interpersonal dynamics and romance than on mysteries
