When people in fiction say stuff like "my throat was dry... so dry, I knew I had to have a drink" they're just being poetic, right? Like, the subjective experience of being thirsty and the subjective experience of desiring alcohol are generally pretty dissimilar? Or am I the weird one for specifically desiring water when I'm thirsty and finding the thought of alcohol unpleasant because it'll dehydrate me more and give me a headache?

you know, now i kinda wonder tho? bc alcohol dependence DOES have a physical component, and i assume that its similar to a craving, where it might be possible to mistake that for hunger/thirst. but im not sure how that actually breaks down and whether the sensation actually FEELS like thirst, and obv i've never had the experience of it myself so i'd like to know more as well now!

it definitely can. i come from a long line of alcoholics and substance abusers, so whatever's going on w us its just real easy to get addicted or dependent on something. while i haven't reached dependence level w alcohol before, i have w weed and soda/caffeine, and while it's not always the exact same feeling as hunger/thirst, it is still at the same physiological level to the extent of like, getting back from the office and taking a hit from my joint of choice was just as essential, if not more so, for self regulation as grabbing a glass of water. and with soda it's so easy to fall into a similar pattern with alcohol, we just don't really talk about it because it's not "as bad" and there's not like, direct behavioral changes. but for instance, im trying to cut out soda now and the past two days i have been guzzling water like never before to a) rehydrate my extremely dehydrated ass and b) to make up for the fact that my brain literally is not perceiving my thirst as being satisfied. like i just hit daily recommended intake of water as i sit here, but my throat and mouth still feel generally parched and when i think about the singular baja blast sitting in my fridge my mouth starts watering. brains and bodies are wild and it's cool that humans are so adaptable, but you gotta be careful what you adapt it to lol

Wanna throw out that when I drank regularly (~2-3 days of the week) there were certainly times when I was thirsty and guzzling a beer did satisfy the thirst! (Who knows whether or not it actually hydrated me sufficiently)

When I was regularly drinking I’d never crave cocktails like this (probably for the reasons you mention), but under the right circumstances I’d definitely crave a beer.
