What is it like to be alone while surrounded by people? To be choked to death by the smog of the city so slowly that even your cries for help aren't understood by those around you? Pulse portrays Tokyo as a tomb of concrete and beige plastic, fantastically detailed wide shots devoid of people and dark corners in which only loneliness hides. Its biggest sin is that it plays its hand face-up, explaining to the viewer too clearly too early what's going on, but that doesn't diminish the incredible framing of shots—occluded views, reflections and transmissions—or the masterful use of light and shadow. Definitely one worth seeing in high def, and in a theater if at all possible.
