i wanna show cohost the game i'm working on! it's called hoptix, and it's a movement playground game inspired by 2d sonic, tony hawk's pro skater, and super smash bros. melee for the nintendo gamecube.

i'll be periodically posting casual gamedev stuff about it here, but probably not as many serious updates or anything, since the vibe here seems a little less like we're doing Professional Advertising Posts lol

thank you!!! idunno if it's 100% socially acceptable here to reply to every single positive comment but it really does mean the world to me. i've been really struggling to find my audience on twitter the last few months, who knew they were apparently all just here on this much better website :p

hey ty so much! right now it's got a time trial mode with a timer that ticks along with the physics engine, which i thiiink is what is wanted for speedrunners? it's something i'll need to do a little more research on before release to make sure. i haven't implemented saving stage records just yet but that's planned too!

also, if i end up having a speedrun community i definitely intend to hear them out about what other features they'd want and add them post release. thanks for asking! :3

hey thank you! my favorite thing about tony hawk is the way everything on the map connects to everything else, so there's always a fun choice for where to go next no matter where you are. i'm trying to do the same thing in hoptix, i hope it ends up working for you :3

honestly this is the kinda advice that's only applicable if you want to pay your bills with the game you're working on!

for me the main thing I'd say is "Make the games you want to play!" and yes- sure there's plenty of pixel platformers out there, but barring the freedom planet series and the first spark the electric jester game, there's not a lot of uh- extremely legally conservative voice momentum based platformers out there in comparison!

I have yet to make a single dollar from the two games I've made but it's been immensely rewarding just to put them out there in the world and see people having fun with them!

SUMMARY: industry advice is only good for making a living (boring! but also understandable) passion projects should be something you're passionate about! (exciting! cool!)
