i continued looking into this and honestly idk how to get cp437 support at all on linux at all, and while it's not clear how Mystic's ANSI/UTF-8 auto-detection is supposed to work or why it's incorrectly detecting ANSI for gnome telnet, the functionality for emitting UTF-8 to the user is there in theory
e: o shit i figured it out, you can install konwert and use filterm ascii:ascii cp437:utf8 telnet .... thanks nethack players
