If you're not already doing it, playing the non-roguelike mode is honestly the best way to play it.

it’s so good. my last game I got to level 33 with 200+ hp and felt like a god until i got run over by a giant wheel and died. I think adding a non-permadeath was a great move, but I still play with it on usually
