hello (at) nickyflowers.com

the thing where youtubers will hold a lavalier mic in their hand? not a fan. it was a little funny the first time i saw that about 5 years ago but it's played out. even worse is when it's not even a lavalier—just came across someone using an airpod as the handheld mic. come on. a shure sm58 is 99 bucks

i watched an hour long youtube video a while ago about this very phenomenon! well the broader phenomenon of Youtubers Holding Mics Now, including but not specifically lavaliers. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0arvnAlV_C4) it's more ponderous than informative though, which is a shame because i would really like to hear youtubers explain why they do this weird thing with the lavaliers. are they really fun to hold, is it a "i dont know what to do with my hands" thing, is it undisclosed sponsorships, did they all get given free lavalier mics at vidcon one time, what is the deaaaaal

haven't watched the vid so not sure if it went this direction, but I trace the phenomenon strongly back to Bo Burnham's Inside. right after Inside I started seeing more and more youtubers in that sort of artist/essayist/thoughtful-person category start mimicking the Inside aesthetic by holding a mic (though usually not a lav mic), and it seems like it's trickled out from there. I'm sure that's only one of many roots/influences, tho!

it doesn't, actually - mostly the video positions it as a cultural response to the corporatization of youtube - but that's really interesting and a good thought!! there's something very interesting about his netflix special becoming influential on youtube and not his youtube videos that got him onto netflix i think...
also his "holding a mic" being a standup comedy thing, not a youtube thing, but it getting incorporated into a youtube thing unrelated to standup..... don't know how to articulate it exactly but it's all very Interesting hahah
