we can save skeumorphism by getting the people who design softsynths to design everything else as well
other UIs: we need to have a slide effect when a panel expands or collapses so it is not visually jarring for users
reason: we need to have cables with shadows that do a little bounce when you open or close the thing
i remember a game dev making a puzzler based on rewiring stuff like an old fashioned telephone exchange, and they showed off footage of the options menu working around said mechanics
