One of my favorites is "I thought we all agreed that we weren't doing XXXXX anymore!" or just anything else that seems to indicate a lack of awareness that there are more than two people in the world
it was so pervasive in the Trump era twitter. nobody can just say an opinion, they have to chastise and scold a guy they've imagined. a bunch of posting cops who have appointed themselves deputy
I feel like I'm mostly fine with Tumblr, but this is one of the things that annoys me about it
What bothers me about it is that it's clearly learned. Like, I think (or at least hope) it's mostly young people who started recognizing and imitating the shape of like, "okay everyone, it's time to sit down and shut up. we need to have a serious talk", because it gets spread enough to have given the impression that this is just what conversation looks like. You need an opponent and a Take to express an opinion.
the opposite is also true: imagining someone scolding you and pre-emptively arguing against them. the thing that video game youtubers used to do of "this top 5 list of Most Awesome Spaghetti In Games is just my opinion and not facts", but applied to every single post one makes. arguing with ghosts.
it's exhausting to see.
