was because of the timing! when “the lost levels” was released in japan, the NES was barely even released in the USA. and people were still just playing mario 1! it took a few years for the NES to really catch on! by the time they needed a sequel, the lost levels would have been horribly and painfully outdated and wouldn’t have competed with 1988 games. the real question is why didn’t they just release mario 3 as mario 2 in the west. (i don’t know.) but doki doki panic was a good game and they managed to bring it back into the spotlight instead of being a random throw away game! (sorry i’m manic tonight)
