When I made The Good Weapon, I set out with the explicit goal of getting 30 unsolicited downloads. I didn't ask my friends to play my game (and I didn't need to, since I already had a feedback group in place). If we're friends, we're friends! Why you gotta play my game/read my stuff anyway, let's just chill and you can hit da bricks whenever you want!!!
I thought 30 would be a safe and hopefully achievable goal. I passed a thousand today. Thank you to everyone who gave my game a chance. 💜
I'm working really hard on my next one. Being a director and trying to hit a certain mood in scenes is probably my favourite part, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit to spending most of my time trying to figure out how to minimize the 'budget'. It's a term I use to describe the effort required to achieve a certain effect, and it's especially important when you're solo-deving most of the time--you gotta know your limitations! Writing only goes so far, and if you try to overcompensate on that front, it starts to veer off into 'why is this even a game in the first place? dude just write a novel'. You gotta be silly and play around with the medium! No rules in life.
The answer to my 'budget' problem invariably comes down to two solutions:
- learn to draw the art yourself
OR
- learn programming to execute cool animations
The latter does make me scream to hell and high heaven. But I'm trying! I'm making so many mistakes but I'm getting there! And as for the first one, I've got a friend coming over to teach me how to use Procreate so I can try and get something done (I have some art experience). At the very least, it might be easier for me to learn how to edit the game event CGs that show up.

Thank you!
