please stop making video games with like 6 part final boss fights and no check points

counting this generously it's a SEVEN phase boss fight. yes 4 parts of it have reduced health, but there's zero checkpoints, and the game is very conservative about giving you back HP during the fight.

and apparently after that you have to do an escape sequence. i have no idea if that has a checkpoint, but i'd definitely scream if i died during that after everything lol.

i'll have to go collect my thoughts on backlogged for this, but i'm really disappointed. i'm seeing a lot of glowing praise for this game, and i can only assume that it's a bunch of bionic people with laser eyes and infinite patience.

edit: i wrote this post while frustrated. i came back and italicized the part that i'm being sarcastic about.

i fucking beat it lol

i want to be clear that this game was by no means the hardest game i've played nor absurdly hard or anything like that.

but there's something about this game's form of difficulty that annoys me, and i think it ultimately boils down to it's hard to see what's going on in this game, be it unclear hitbox vs hurtbox on a boss, having a ton of sprites on screen, or turning out the lights and making almost everything black lol

i have chronic dry eyes (this is where oil glands in your eyes die and never come back), so games that make me focus really hard uninterrupted for a long time can be pretty challenging for me to get thru.

in reply to @wavebeem's post:

That sucks, i havent even been able to play it myself because i have weird stuttering performance issues. Everything else about the game looks nice but idk if i will finish it (if i can even get it to work right) if there's that much masochism at the end of it lol

i mean, there's a lot to like about this game! and if you have better reaction speed / vision than me you may well get thru it perfectly and love it.

the music is incredible, and the art is just so wild and unique. i bought the soundtrack and will definitely be giving that a listen.

IDK personally I really struggle with both platformers and side scrolling action games, and my reaction speed is below average, and I never found Pizza Tower to be sadistic. The final boss is hard for sure, phase one in particular I found to be quite difficult, but Peppino is buffed pretty significantly early into the fight, and the game also gives you something to throw at the boss, which makes them vulnerable and causes their attack to be cut short. The phases aren’t very long either, the whole fight is like 5 minutes long, if that. The escape sequence afterwards has a really generous timer, though I can’t speak to whether or not it will make you do the fight again if you fail to escape.

Outside of the boss fights, the levels aren’t super punishing for making mistakes. The only negative effect to getting hit is that your score goes down and you get stunned for a second. I got hit a lot during my playthrough and I don’t remember it ever causing me to fail out of a level, it only caused me to be graded poorly.

I don’t think their opinion is wrong or anything, it’s okay to have a negative experience and I think there’s value in sharing that with others. I agree with what they mentioned in their backloggd review about how an “easy mode” would help give more people the chance to enjoy the game. Maybe some cheat codes like many older games had would be a good addition as well for if you’re super stuck. I just wanted to share my experience, since I’m anything but a bionic person with laser eyes and infinite patience, and I found Pizza Tower to be a wonderful experience.

i'm glad you had a better time than me, but showing up to my venting post to tell me you're not that good at this kind of game but you didn't find it frustrating doesn't really make me feel better about the whole situation.

I’m sorry that I upset you. I just thought you were sharing your thoughts on the game. If I had realized this was venting, I wouldn’t have left a comment.

I wasn’t really responding to you though. I was responding to sudo-EatPant’s comment saying he may not finish the game if the ending is masochistic, and the point of my comment was that, despite also struggling with the game, we had totally different experiences, and that he should wait and see what his own experience is before writing it off. I’m really sorry that I came off as though I was making a jab at you.

thanks! fwiw im over it now and was just a bit heated in that moment.

i ended up giving it a couple more tries and finishing it after reading your comment though, so thanks for the motivation haha.

i definitely agree that the first phase is weirdly the hardest, though the final phase often has a really short window of vulnerability before he does his jumping attack toward you... or maybe there's a fake vulnerability thing im not sure really haha.

the person i looked up beat the escape sequence with only 4 seconds left but i think i had closer to a minute

Congrats on your victory! Agreed on the final phase, the short invulnerability is pretty mean. Also, out of curiosity, I went to check and even the any% world record only had 2:15 left at the end of the tower escape so I’m pretty sure I’m just full of shit lol. Definitely not a “really generous” timer at least.
