Barely used the website in its heyday, but reminded me that LiveJournal had "moods" you could select for every post, complete with an icon for each mood from the list

honestly makes sense. a much more feasible (in terms of not expecting users draw every emotion they'll ever express), yet dated way (by today's standards, as preformatted moods/statuses have fallen to the wayside) of expressing the writer's feelings. i fuck with it. could be nice to bring back, but i dunno by whom.
Whoever that might potentially be, they should just reimplement the full set of ICQ's extended range of statuses as no one needs more than that and they got all the bases covered

Maybe Discord, as much as I hate it, should add these for all the free users to use by default.......................
I remember we also had multiple pfps we could upload, then select from for every post and comment! The RP community used this to set tone by having facial expressions of the character that correlated to the mood of the posts (a whole library of 100x100px Sasuke screenshots for every possible emotion), but in a more abstract sense regular users did this too - serious icons, silly icons, grumpy icons, etc. Icon makers were a similar sort of fan culture niche as gifsetmakers on Tumblr are.
Very similar to what OP depicts, where the tone indicator is the avatar image.
This was the feature I liked the most about Miiverse - you could pick a facial expression to go with it. It'd even affect the "Yeah" button. Posting with a 😢 would make it say "Yeah..."
Much better way to frame the "like" button IMO.
ooh! using a character creator to make having different expressions easily available is genius! never used miiverse, so i didn't know about that "yeah" functionality. that's sick as hell!
